It Doesn't Have to be the Weekend to Wear These!

I received a sample pair of Columbia Women's Saturday Trail II Knee Pants last week, and couldn't wait to test them out. Ironically, I tried them out last Saturday when we went for a little hike.

These knee pants are straight leg with articulated knees, and have a mid-rise waist. They are lightweight and the slight stretch they have makes them quite comfortable. They feature Omni-Shade™ UPF 50 rated sun protection, as well as, OmniShield™ moisture and stain repellent technology. They have typical pants pockets, as well as a small zippered security pocket on the leg that is perfect for my one addiction - Chapstick lip balm! The leg hems can cinch to make the cuff loose or snug to customize your preference. It should be noted that although the legs do have some stretch to them, the waistband itself does not. This works perfectly fine for me as I'm smaller in the waist but larger through the thigh. If you are person who has a thicker waist then you might have to go up a size to accommodate the waist portion of the pant.

The Columbia Women's Saturday Trail II Knee Pants are available in 4-6 colours, and in a range of sizes from 2-16 in Regular, and Plus size from 16W-24W.  Columbia, in fact, has quite a few Plus sized clothing items available online.

The Columbia Women's Saturday Trail II Knee Pants retail in Canada for $69.99 for Regular sizing and $74.99 in Plus. In the U.S., Regular sizing retails for $50, and $55 in Plus.

May the 4th be With You! Star Wars & Lego Star Wars Boutiques on Now!

It can be a challenge to get some kids reading. One of the keys is to find something that they find interesting and engages them. Something that makes them want to read, as opposed to needing to read. DK Books Canada has a wide array of DK Readers to appeal to your little learners.

From Star Wars, to Lego & Lego Friends, to animals, and other titles, there is a wide variety of topics rated Level 1 through Level 4. These books also contain a glossary as well as an index and also includes a quiz on the content of the book. This is a great feature to not only challenge the reader, but also to help confirm comprehension of what they've read.

DK Canada currently has a May the 4th Star Wars Boutique on right now, just in time for Star Wars Day. Featured in this boutique are 24 publications, including 3 Star Wars DK Readers from Levels 1 through Level 3.  Star Wars The Force Awakens: New Adventures is Level 1, Lego Star Wars The Force Awakens is a Level 2 and Star Wars Rebels Fight the Empire is a Level 3 reader. DK Readers in paperback generally retail for approximately $4.99CAN/$3.99USD. You can also find some Lego Star Wars titles in their Lego Boutique

Also included in this boutique are a number of other cool Star Wars titles. From very detailed Star Wars Character Encyclopedias, to Star Wars Ultimate Sticker Collections, to Star Wars: The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary, there is something for any Star Wars fan. These titles are typically available online and wherever books are sold.

DK Canada is also offering their free 2016 Printable Star Wars Activity Kit download which has 35 pages of various activities such as true/false trivia, colouring pages, connect the dots, find a words, and a whole lot more! Additionally, you can also download their free 6-page Lego Star Wars Activity Kit

May the 4th be with you!

1,000 Stickers in DK's Ultimate Sticker Collections!

If your kids love stickers, then you have to consider the variety of DK Ultimate Sticker Collections available from DK Books! Whether it's Lego, Finding Dory, Frozen, Disney Princesses, Star Wars, various animals or even U.S. Presidents, there is a title for you.

I recently received the Marvel Heroes Unite Ultimate Sticker Collection, as well as, the Marvel Good Vs. Evil Ultimate Sticker Collection for review. These particular titles each feature 1,000 stickers and contain sections such as "Bases & Hideouts", "Epic Battle Weapons, "Meet the Superheroes", among other pre-determined areas where you can apply the stickers. There are also a tonne of other stickers that can be used for creating your own battles, and for general free play.

The 2 particular titles that I reviewed were approximately $13.99CAN/$12.99USD, and contained 96 pages. DK Ultimate Sticker Collection sticker books range from 60 stickers all the way up to 1,000! I suspect the titles containing a smaller amount would be cheaper in price.

Some titles are geared to older children as they may contain images of firearms and other weapons, however the majority are child-friendly across the board. Perhaps consider checking the content if it's a topic that could be more graphic for younger ones.

For Marvel or other super hero fans, DK Books Canada currently has a Heroes & Villains Boutique on! DK Ultimate Sticker Collections and other DK titles are available at a wide variety of in-store and online retailers.

Is This Movie Appropriate for Your Child?

Our 7-year-old son recently expressed interest in seeing a movie that was rated PG. While we would ideally prefer a movie that is rated for everyone, we understand that he is growing up. We also recognize that sometimes movies can be a good catalyst to discuss life events that stem from themes in a film. When it comes to a movie that is not rated G for young children, we as parents, want to know details so that we can make a judgement call as to whether or not it would be appropriate. Every child is different, and processes various subject matter in their own individual way. Therefor, you may have to consider a variety of factors if more than one child might be viewing the film, along with whether or not it conforms with your family values and what you are comfortable exposing your child to.

Assuming it is eventually one we'd let him watch, we also might want to have dialogue about certain subjects ahead of time so that he is prepared for what he may see during the feature. While you could always screen the movie yourself for suitability, it's not always that easy if it's a movie that is currently playing in the theatres. Nor do people necessarily have the time or budget for that.

If you're struggling with this as well, here are some ideas to help you determine appropriateness for your child(ren):

Use social media to your advantage. Ask your Facebook friends, or join a Facebook parenting group. You'll find a wealth of knowledge & information there at your fingertips. Poll members to see if they've seen the movie, and what their take on it was. This can help towards you getting a well-rounded opinion of the content. While you might not always feel the way they do, you will usually get a number of varying opinions, giving you insight you would otherwise not have.  You can also take the opportunity to ask specific questions about any potential areas of concerns.

Alternatively, you can search for websites such as those below, which offer movie reviews typically from a parent's perspective:
Don't forget to pay attention to the actual rating's fine print. It usually justifies the reasons for the assigned classification. Bear in mind though, that just because your child is the age that coincides with the rating, doesn't guarantee its suitability. If you have a particularly sensitive child, or one who's had trauma, then it would be especially important to determine suitability.

For a breakdown on all the ratings and what they mean in general terms, please visit The Motion Picture Association of Canada. For those of you in the U.S., please refer to FilmRatings.com

All of this information can help you come to an educated decision on whether or not you feel your child could handle any given film, and whether or not it is a fit for your family as a whole.

Happy viewing!

Disney on Ice 100 Years of Magic is Mesmerizing!

We went to see Disney On Ice 100 Years of Magic this morning at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. We almost didn't make it as my son had developed a fever a few days before. Thankfully, it cleared up just in time for us to still attend the show. And boy, am I glad we did!

From start to finish, this show was energetic and mesmerizing. We loved the familiar songs and the characters from the last 100 years! Be it back to the beginning with Pinocchio, one of the more recent Frozen personalities or anyone in between, you are bound to love it!

Personally, my favorite was the Finding Nemo skit. But truth be told, I loved it all. My 3 year old was enthralled through the whole thing, and my older son enjoyed it all as well. (Even though he said he wasn't looking forward to seeing the princesses.) Little did he know that he would enjoy them just as much.

Disney on Ice 100 Years of Magic has Mickey and Minnie as the Masters of Ceremonies, and does a great job at including so many Disney characters from over the last 100 years. Cinderella, Princess Tiana, Donald Duck, Goofy, Mulan, Snow White, Buzz Lightyear, Aladdin, and so many others came out to make this show a hit.

At the Rogers Centre, there is a complimentary stroller check, for those that have young ones that need their wheels. I'm not sure if this would be the case at other venues, but this was a great option at this particular location.

If you have the opportunity, go and see this show. I'm confident you and your children would love it! Disney on Ice 100 Years of Magic will be in Toronto at the Rogers Centre until Sunday, March 20th with both daytime and evening performances. To purchase tickets, please visit Ticketmaster or DisneyOnIce.ca.

The Pioneer Woman Collection is Pleasantly Rustic & Charming!

As my regular followers know, I am an avid Pioneer Woman fan. I was excited when she first announced her new cookware line a while back, and was equally excited once I saw all the items available to consumers in the United States.

I was thrilled to get the opportunity to review The Pioneer Woman Timeless Beauty 7-Quart Oval Cast Iron Dutch Oven, as well as, her Timeless Beauty 4-Piece Cast Iron Cookbook Holder and Trivet Set! I couldn't wait to put it all to good use!

Upon receipt of the products, I immediately got to work testing out the 7-Quart Oval Dutch Oven. After washing it out, the first thing I made was The Pioneer Woman's Chicken Cacciatore recipe from her Dinnertime Cookbook. The chicken browned beautifully and baked well with the sauce in the oven afterward. It was a cinch to clean, which is always appreciated! I also made beef tacos using stewing beef, with her delicious Enchilada Sauce as the liquid to simmer the meat in until fork tender. The third thing I made was a huge batch of meat sauce for some lasagne that I was going to make. The oval shape is great if you were using a whole chicken or cooking with another oblong piece of meat.  I love it for all of these purposes and the ease of cleaning. I love the size of this one, as it allows you to make large batches to feed a big family, or to make large batches ahead of time for freezing. The Pioneer Woman Timeless Beauty 7-Quart Oval Cast Iron Dutch Oven is oven safe up to 500F. It comes in a variety of colours, and retails in the U.S. for approximately $80USD. The Pioneer Woman Collection also has a 5-Quart Round Dutch Oven available in various colours. It retails for $50USD if you were looking for a smaller or more cost effective option.

The three trivets that come with the 4-Piece Cast Iron Cookbook Holder and Trivet Set are beautiful. I love the vibrant blue, yellow and red colours. And they seem quite sturdy. There are little rubber stoppers on the bottom to protect your counter or table tops and are 8" wide, which is perfect for most pots and pans.

The Cast Iron Cookbook Holder from the set is very pretty and does its job. It held my cookbooks open well. I was a bit disappointed however, with the roughness of the cast iron. I was expecting it to have a smoother finish and am a bit worried about the underside possibly scratching a counter top or other surface that you might be using it on. This could easily be solved by adding some sticky protectors on the bottom, which I will be doing to get better use out of it. But with that being said, I do think that this issue would have been better solved if dealt with at the design and manufacturing levels. A consumer should not have to trouble shoot the intended use of a product. The 4-Piece Cast Iron Cookbook Holder and Trivet Set retails for approximately $43USD.

Overall, I love the products! At this time, The Pioneer Woman Collection is currently available exclusively at Walmart in the U.S. only. I cannot wait for the line to hit Canadian shelves!  I'm currently looking into when that might eventually happen and will let you all know by adding a timeframe, replacing this line once I find out.

All of these items are hand wash only. Treat them with love and I'm confident you'll be happy with them, even if the book holder is a bit on the rough side.

To check out other products manufactured by Gibson Overseas, you can visit their website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

The Harley Pasternak Power Blender Packs a Multi-Purpose Punch!

Celebrity trainer & nutritionist Harley Pasternak, who has worked with the likes of Lady Gaga, Rihanna & Katy Perry, has designed his own professional grade power blender. The Harley Pasternak Power Blender is comparable to high end power blenders, for less than 1/2 the price! Who doesn't love that?

This 1500 watt power blender can pulverize frozen fruit and berries, crush ice, liquefy, chop and emulsify a variety of fresh ingredients, and can even create and cook (yes cook!) soup in a matter of minutes by friction alone! Not only can you make smoothies for everyone in your family, you can also make baby food, and can use it to make your own nut butters.

The Harley Pasternak Power Blender features a 2L Tritan™ jar, whose shape creates a vortex to ensure nothing gets left un-blended. It has an 8-blade blending system - 4 saw tooth blades and 4 ultra-sharp angled blades. Ain't nothing getting away from those puppies!

Included with the blender is a tamper to push down anything that requires a little bit of help, and a 24oz leak proof on-the-go bottle. It also comes with a number of recipes, such as homemade salad dressings, hummus, soups, dips, and of course, lots of smoothies.

I love the power that this blender has. I've tried making a number of different smoothies and it's been fantastic. I normally use frozen fruit when making mine and have always had issues getting blenders to effectively break down the produce. This blender pulverized the frozen items very well, and very quickly. Some of the larger pieces of frozen fruit such as peaches and mango chunks did require a bit more liquid to break them down but the appliance was still very effective in doing so. If you were using fresh produce, it would be even more of a breeze. The only thing I find that it doesn't pulverize completely is raspberry and blackberry seeds. But this is not any different than most blenders on the market.

While I haven't made any homemade baby food in this particular blender myself, I have made it with other blenders in the past. This blender would easily make quick work out a batch of baby fruit, veg and/or meat. I also love that you can make all sorts of smoothies for your kids. This is especially great if you have a picky child who turns their nose up at produce. You can hide all sorts of fruit and veggies in a smoothie and they'd likely be none the wiser. Let 'em think they're having a milkshake! :)

The 2L jug allows you to make large batches in one shot. We normally make a bunch and put the extra in the fridge for the next day. It feels sturdy and comfortable in the hand and the spout is great for pouring. While the soup feature is pretty cool, I personally am not crazy about heating food products in plastic.  For this reason, I would much prefer a glass jar as opposed to plastic.

Cleaning this blender jar is a cinch. All you do is empty the jar, and give it a little rinse. Fill the jug with 4 cups of warm water and a couple of drops of dish soap, put on the lid, and turn on the blender for a few seconds. The swirling warm sudsy water cleans off the debris and you simply rinse out the jug, and turn it over onto a dish rack or tea towel to dry. The manual does indicate that the jar itself is dishwasher safe on the top rack only. Because the jar is so tall, it's unlikely that most household dishwashers would be able to accommodate it in this location.

The Harley Pasternak Power Blender comes in quite a few different colours to suit anyone's taste. It comes with a limited 5-year warranty on any defects. You will need your original receipt should something happen to go wrong with this item, so don't throw it out. They warrant that they will repair or replace the blender within that time frame or will refund you your money on a pro-rated basis. This amount will depend on how much time is left on your warranty. Note: The warranty does not include shipping costs.

To view a video of all that this blender has to offer, please click this link.

The Harley Pasternak Power Blender is available at a number of retailers across the country and retails for approximately $299.99CAN/$249.99USD
